Honestly save yourself some time and to to post searing thats where u can really get material. In pre you can get bones and dust in drops of 1-2 which is much to slow. In retrospect you could be progressing in post searing game since you dont really need materials other than armor.

Buy salvage kits and salvage everything you can
Kill charr north of the wall they tend to drop some good stuff....
Then again it's much easier to aquire materials in post searing......

A tip for you....
Whatever you do don't salvage the charr hides from north wall if you have them drop.
Instead save them and take them to post and go to Calissa Sedgwick in Ascalon City
she is near the main Storage and she will trade 4 Charr Hides for 1 Fur Square
saving you lots of money as that is a rare material to buy if you needed to buy them.
Charr hides you also get in post but i always save mine from pre for the tip to post.
Also the Char carvings save them as at many events there is usually a trader for them.

Yes, the char in pre searing Ascalon are located in the Northlands, which is behind the wall to the right of where you spawn when you leave Ascalon. You need two people to reach the area, so you could advertise in all chat that you are looking for a charr killing partner, or just a gate opener (commonly reffered to as a "Gate Monkey") if you feel you are ready to face the charr by yourself.

Plant Fiber is a common crafting material used to craft various items in Guild Wars. When you salvage an item, it either becomes a common crafting material or a rare crafting material, depending on what you salvage.

Skale fins salvage into scales, which bring a good price at the material trader in post. Iron salvaged from weapons also brings a good price.

However, I agree with those who have said not to stay in pre just to farm materials. That's a waste of time, since you get bigger mat drops in post and more kinds of mats there. Also, salvage items in post give you more mats than those in pre. Just bring what you have and get on with the game.
